While engrossed in conversation, the protagonist's bag was snatched by a Pancham, so Gai entrusted one of his starter Pokémon to help the protagonist. He scouted the protagonist into the MZ group and also offered housing to Deuro and Pyure in exchange for their joining. It seems he is searching for someone and has asked Machiell to assist in the search.
