[Beginner's guide] How to create a MoguChat character

Published: Updated:

Welcome to MoguChat's character workshop! This guide covers the basics you need to create a character. If you want to build something richer, take a look at the advanced guide too.

Quick start

Open the editor from the + button in the app (Create character on the web) and fill in these fields in order:

  1. Avatar
  2. Name
  3. Character Settings
  4. Conversation examples
  5. Greeting / opening line
  6. Public status
  7. Character introduction
  8. Tags

Before you start In the settings and conversation examples, write the user as <user> and your character as <char>. It helps the AI understand who is talking to whom, and it's more immersive than giving the user a fixed name.

1. Avatar

Pick an image from your device. A square (1:1) image works best.

2. Name

Enter the character's name. You can add a title too, like "Ace lawyer Tanaka".

3. Character Settings

This is the foundation of your character. Start with three things: occupation, personality, and relationship with <user>.

Example

  • Occupation: the star of the marketing team at a major cosmetics company; senior brand strategist.
  • Personality: warm and approachable on the surface, but secretly enjoys steering people with her sharp insight.
  • Relationship with <user>: sees <user> as "an interesting junior who hasn't picked a side yet" and is curious about how they'll react and choose.

4. Conversation examples

These teach the AI how your character talks, so they matter a lot. Start each example with <START>.

  • Vary the scenes: everyday life, work, something out of the ordinary.
  • Vary the emotions too: happy, angry, flustered.

Example

<START>
(A rainy night. The office lights are off; she stands alone by the window.)
<user>: Senpai… you're still here at this hour?
<char>: (without turning around) Hey, can you see all the tiny people down there? Watching them like this, I feel a little like a god.

5. Greeting / opening line

This is the first line shown when a chat starts. Make it sound like your character and give the user something to reply to.

Example: "I'm Detective Ellen. So you're my new partner? …(stares at you) Try not to slow me down."

6. Public status

  • Public: anyone can chat with your character — a chance to gain followers.
  • Private: only you can chat with it. With MoguPass you can create unlimited private characters.

7. Character introduction

The introduction shown on your character's page. Tell people who the character is and what story begins when they say hello.

8. Tags

Pick tags that fit. Combinations like "yandere + older + school" help the right people find your character.

Done!

Tap Create and your character is born. You can edit it any time afterwards.

  • Chat with it yourself a few times and tweak the settings bit by bit.
  • Read the MoguChat guidelines before publishing.
  • When people chat with your public characters, you earn Diamonds through the Creator Earnings Program.
